Phillips Field and the Local Mountain Fund of the Mt. Ashland Ski Area. Both causes support recreation, and both are investments in the community's future. The turf project appeared to have met its goal until an engineering report in August revealed more extensive excavation would be necessary to complete the job. That boosted the estimated cost from $850,000 to $1,225,000. A week from today is the deadline to raise the last $360,000 if bids are to be solicited in January so construction can take place next summer, in time for the 2016-17 fall season. That's not much time to close the gap, so supporters are hoping for some deep-pocketed donors to step up. The Mt. Ashland campaign is focused on short-term upgrades to aging equipment at Southern Oregon's publicly owned ski area and building enough cushion to avoid going into debt every winter to open the mountain. Two consecutive low-snow years have hurt the resort's bottom line. The goal is $650,000, of which $315,000 has been raised. The money will replace the roof on the lodge, upgrade ski lift ramps for low-snow conditions and trim trails to improve safety. None of the money will go toward the controversial expansion proposal, which is on hold. Both of these campaigns benefit the community, and are worthy of support.
