AHS ROUNDUP Grizzlies rough up Eagles for fourth win in a row Ashland girls soccer team red hot heading into league opener By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings DailyTidings.com By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Oct. 1, 2014 @ 2:00 am By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Oct. 1, 2014 @ 2:00 am » Social News The Ashland High girls soccer team will head into league play as one of the hottest teams in the state after another dominant performance Tuesday in Eagle Point. Ia Balbuena-Nedrow and Faci Graham scored in the first half and Ashland controlled the tempo throughout in a 2-0 nonconference victory over Eagle Point at Eagle Stadium. Balbuena-Nedrow connected from 30 yards away in the 14th minute to put the Grizzlies ahead to stay, and Graham added an insurance goal in the 34th when she delivered off a nice assist from Mikaela Perry. The win was Ashland’s fourth in a row, a streak that has seen the Grizzlies (6-1-1) destroy their opponents by a combined score of 20-0. “We don’t want something to happen, we want to make something happen, and for that you have to have possession of the ball,” said Ashland coach Eric Wolff, whose team was ranked No. 2 Tuesday night in the fluid Class 5A power rankings. “That’s what we’ve been working on.” That work appears to have paid off for Ashland, which hasn’t lost since suffering a 3-1 setback at St. Mary’s on Sept. 6. Balbuena-Nedrow made sure the Grizzlies’ streak continued by taking advantage of Eagle Point’s sagging defense. The junior playmaker took control of the ball well beyond the penalty box, noticed she wasn’t being marked and let fly a long shot that hit the crossbar and barely crossed the goal line. Twenty minutes later Graham added another highlight to what has been a senior season full of them when she scored from about 10 yards away. Perry’s touch pass set up the putaway, which all but ended the Eagles’ hopes considering Ashland’s dominance in the possession department. Eagle Point fell to 3-4-1. Now, the Grizzlies will try to stay hot as they embark on their six-game Midwestern League schedule beginning Friday against North Eugene (3-2-1). “I think we’re ready,” Wolff said. “We’re excited and we’re ready.” Boys Soccer Lucas Golding’s nifty back-heel goal in the 74th minute gave Ashland a 1-0 win over Eagle Point on Tuesday at Ashland Middle School. Golding booted in a loose ball after a hard shot from 10 yards away by sophomore Bryce Rollins was blocked by Eagle Point’s goalkeeper. Ashland (4-3), which has won four in a row since starting the season with three straight losses, controlled the game but couldn’t finish until Golding’s follow. “Early in the season we spent a lot of time solidifying our defense, and for the last several weeks we’ve focused on our attack as a group,” Ashland coach Brad Roupp said. “We’ve been having numbers in the attacking third of the field and it’s paying off. We’re not necessarily scoring more but we’re scoring when we need to.” Ashland opens its six-game Midwestern League schedule Friday against North Eugene. Girls Volleyball At Eagle Point, a day after their head coach, Robin Akpan, gave birth to a baby boy the Ashland Grizzlies delivered their best performance of the season in a straight-set, Midwestern League victory Tuesday over Eagle Point. The Grizzlies hit a season-high .480, blasted a season-high 11 aces and committed only two hitting errors in a 25-15, 25-12, 25-12 win over Eagle Point. Hope Baldrica and Grace Lenthe had seven kills apiece and Payton Onesti added four aces for Ashland (10-3, 6-1 MWL), which has won five of its last six matches. Olivia Rooney added six kills for the Grizzlies. Eagle Point fell to 1-11, 1-5 in league play.
