I mean that in many senses. Have you been attacked or do you feel unsafe in any way because of the deer? Are you concerned about their well-being, either because of natural causes or human actions, by the city or by citizens? Do you have any bright ideas about how we can handle or interact with our deer to improve the deer/human interactions in our community? This year I have received a number of disturbing reports from locals describing hair-raising episodes in which they or their dogs were attacked by surprisingly aggressive deer. Deer are supposed to run away, aren't they, at least when we yell and wave our arms? But sometimes they don't. So what do we do about this? Also this year, up through a week ago, Public Works picked up 62 dead deer. What do we do about that? I think it's time that we, as a community, take stock of our situation with regard to our deer and, for that reason, I'm hosting a Deer Summit from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept, 23, at the City Council Chambers, 1175 E. Main St. The event will be televised live (channel 9 or Charter channel 180) so as many people as possible can tune in. The purpose of the meeting is to gather public input, including suggestions for things the city can do and citizens can do. No attempt to make decisions will take place but rather, after the meeting, an Open City Hall topic will be set up on the city website for commentary and recommendations from the public — after which I will report to the council what has transpired, with suggestions for next steps. Carol Voisin has graciously agreed to help facilitate the conversation at the summit and has arranged for the "wildlife committee," a small group of local experts that she convened years ago, to join us and to answer questions and give their perspective. If you care about our deer — from any perspective — now is the time to step forward and get involved in the conversation. I look forward to seeing you Wednesday evening. John Stromberg, mayor Haggen making progress I write this to counter the bad press Haggen Foods has received in news stories and even in Daily Tidings letters. I think people should give them a second chance. At first, I too was struck by some prices being higher than the old Safeway store, and disappointed at the slow process of changeover to the new store brand. But lately, I've noticed some improvements, and want to give the company credit. Since the changeover, the produce section has sparkled with top quality fruits and vegetables, lots of organic choices, and many locally sourced produce items. The meat department offers really nice USDA Choice beef, as well as some cuts graded Prime, unique in Ashland. The chain probably would have benefited from taking more time for the transition between Safeway's closing and Haggen's opening. That said, I believe they are making progress.
