By exposing the GOP’s shameless and destructive opposition to providing all of America’s children the opportunity for the best education possible, he dramatically illustrates how shockingly pathological that party’s politics have become. This country can waste $4 trillion on unnecessary wars but cannot provided its children with a lifelong education? To what low and self-destructive depths has America descended? As as Honoré puts it: “Offering our children a robust education — beginning with preschool and lasting through community college should be a moral imperative.” I, myself, would extend that opportunity to all children through postgraduate degrees — you know, the way it was for my generation when in college I paid eight dollars a semester for everything, including books, and received financial aid all the way through to my Ph.D. Of course, that was in the days when the top 10 percent actually paid substantial taxes and also long before we started to pay one trillion, three hundred billion dollars a year on our military. There may be no “panaceas” to cure our nation of its present self-destructive politics and priorities, but, whatever the remedy, the best education of all our children will indeed be a vital part of any solution — or should I say, “salvation”? Gerald Cavanaugh , Ashland County doesn't care On Tuesday, Feb. 4, the federal court in Medford heard the argument as to weather Jackson County or Our Family Farms Coalition should defend the passed Measure 15-119 ban on GMO cultivation, except that the court did not hear from Jackson County. Instead, the court heard from the Monsanto / GMO alfalfa-planting complainants on behalf of the rights of Jackson County to defend this case. Apparently Jackson County cares so little about the success of Measure 15-119 that they wouldn't even stand up and object to OFFC's intervention. If Jackson County doesn't care to even say a word to the judge, perhaps those Jackson County attorneys should just go home and go back to bed and sleep it off. Archie Koenig , Talent Wolves, or humans? The "Looking at compensation for wolf kills" article, published Feb. 3, quotes rancher Dalton Straus: "They are the most devastating, meanest, orneriest animal on the planet. They kill to eat and also kill to play." He is, of course, referring to humans, correct? Eric Cislo , Ashland Can't wait for new park As the local children’s book author of the book titled "ONE," I am excited to see a new park being built in Ashland for kids and adults alike. It’s called Ashland Creek Park and located at 27 Hersey St.. This park has a nice playground for the kids and non-commercial organic gardening for those with a green thumb. Every day I pass by and enjoy watching it being built. It’s coming along nicely. Even Mother Nature’s offering her support by way of a beautiful rainbow. Keep up the good work, city of Ashland, I look forward to playing here with my kids as soon as it’s open. I can hardly wait.
