The theater program of the Oregon Center for the Arts will host its Lunacy Theatre Festival Thursday through Tuesday, Sept. 25 through 30, in the Center Square Theatre on the SOU campus. James Donlon, the festival's creator and a theater arts professor at SOU, has more than 40 years experience in movement, mime, dance, clowning, puppetry and acting to his credit. He says audience members can expect exciting theater performances, as well as a free performance workshop. "We have an interesting lineup with amazing artists offering strong performances and physical comedy,” Donlon says. “The idea is to basically bring work that is very visual, very physical, very creative, topical and cutting edge.” Physical comedy, Donlon explains, involves performance that focuses on the visual, using gestures and situations. “With physical comedy, performers inspire people to laugh and look at the world with new eyes. It's a powerful form that immediately connects people. You can connect with people and tackle some powerful issues. It's a combination of classic silent film technique, gestures, action, clowning and imagination. Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, Sid Caesar, Jim Carrey and Robin Williams are great examples,” he adds. The festival will open with “Circo de tu Corazon,” a collaboration between Donlon and actors Alina Cenal and Karen Hoyer that depicts the adventures of an eccentric Latin circus lost somewhere in the Americas. “This is a wacky, fun show. I'm excited to be working with such terrific actors. Karen Hoyer is a former student of mine, so it feels really special to perform with her,” Donlon says. “Circo de tu Corazon” shows at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, followed by an information Q-and-A with the cast, and again at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28. The festival will feature three acclaimed one-person shows. “Geezer,” by Geoff Hoyle, explores the aging process, with comic reminiscences of Hoyle's English boyhood, his adult life and even a riff on life in a nursing home. “Geezer” plays at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, and 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, followed by a Q-and-A session. Hoyle created the role of Zazu in the Broadway production of "The Lion King," and he's performed in vaudeville shows, worked in The Pickle Family Circus and performed with Cirque Du Soleil's "Nouvelle Experience." “Words from a Cuban Father,” by Alina Cenal, explores the performers' real-life experiences as an immigrant child and her father's strong presence as she navigates her way through American life. It shows at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, followed by a Q-and-A, and at 9:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29.  “Steve Seabrook: Better Than You,” created and performed by San Francisco stand-up comedian Kurt Bodden, satirizes the self-help industry and motivational speakers. See it at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29, and 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30, followed by a Q-and-A. Tickets to "Circo de tu Corazon" and the three one-person shows cost $10, free for students. "New Lunacies," a collection of nine short pieces by SOU Theater Arts students, will be presented at 11 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, and 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30. Admission to "New Lunacies" is free. “We really pushed the students to use their imaginations and write their own material and to come out into the world as strong artists,” Donlon says.  The festival also includes a free, two-hour physical theater workshop with Donlon. “It'll be great for actors, dancers, directors or anyone interested in making connections through physical expression,” Donlon says. The workshop is set for 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 27, and is open to those of high-school age and older. It's Donlon's plan to see Lunacy Theatre become an annual event. “We'd like to see the festival grow and happen in a variety of venues from theaters to tents and outdoor spaces in the future. Our plan is to bring in artists from outside the region, even outside the country,” he says. “This festival is going to be a very fun event. It's an exciting, high-level theater experience for everyone.”  All events will take place at SOU's Center Square Theatre on South Mountain Avenue. Tickets can be purchased at the Performing Arts box office located in the Music Recital Hall lobby. The box office is open from noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and two hours before each performance. Tickets also can be purchased online at www.sou.edu/performingarts or by calling 541-552-6348.   By Angela Decker for Revels DailyTidings.com By Angela Decker for Revels Posted Sep. 18, 2014 @ 12:01 am » Comment or view comments Reader Reaction » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox. calendar Connect with DailyTidings.com Facebook Twitter RSS Back to top Reader Services Reader Services home Subscriptions Subscriber controls Contact us Submissions Photos Events Letters to the editor Corrections Alerts Email alerts RSS feeds Text Alerts Advertise Media Kit Home Products and services Ad rates Advertising contacts Mail Tribune Daily Tidings The Nickel Shop Our Valley Blogs Stay Informed Email newsletter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox.
