Free home safety program rolls out | Daily Tidings

Disabled persons and seniors can now get free home safety assessments and modifications to their homes from Ashland Fire & Rescue. Interested parties can attend a free presentation by Fire Chief Mike D’Orazi from 1-3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, at the Ashland Senior Center, 1699 Homes Ave. The Housing Safety Program service is free to applicants 62 years and older or disabled people who meet financial qualifications. Improvements include installation of smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, raised toilet seats, grab bars, wheel chair ramps and more, mostly to prevent falls and to allow safe accessibility. Partnering organizations will perform annual follow-ups. Senior and Adult Services Coordinator Natalie Mettler said this event is just for people to get more information and to answer any questions. It is not an application process. “This is an informative presentation about the new program that the fire department is rolling out that will help seniors and people with disabilities in Ashland to be able to stay in their homes if they can’t afford to pay for modifications themselves,” Mettler said. At the August city council meeting where the program was approved, D’Orazi said he participated in a program similar to this previously in another city.
