Raiders' quarterback battle front and center in Red and White game By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings DailyTidings.com By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted May. 1, 2015 @ 2:00 am By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted May. 1, 2015 @ 2:00 am » Social News p bs:newslist StartDate="20121121" EndDate="p bs:datecalc Months="3"" DateSort="1" UseObjects="1" ObjectClass="81" Taxonomywords="2324,665" ExactTaxonomyMatch="1" Image="1" Count="4" --> How does Southern Oregon University plan to replace the national offensive player of the year, the most prolific passer in the history of NAIA football? SOU head coach Craig Howard isn’t sure his team will ever find another signal-caller like Austin Dodge, but he believes if one is currently on the roster they can take a major step toward seizing the reins of the Raider offense during the Red and White spring game tonight at Raider Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m., and the game between two full offenses and defenses will feature four 12-minute quarters. The game culminates SOU’s spring camp, which began April 6. Buried on the depth chart initially, Dodge took over as the Raiders’ starting QB three games into his freshman campaign in 2011 and was never supplanted, shattering every major passing record while leading Southern Oregon to the playoffs twice and the program’s first national championship in December. It was quite a ride but now Dodge, having exhausted his eligibility, is back in his hometown of Vancouver, Wash., watching the NFL draft in hopes that his name will get called. The Raiders, meanwhile, are beginning the post-Dodge era with what is shaping up to be a three-man race at quarterback. Vying to become Dodge’s replacement are 6-foot-4 redshirt junior-to-be Jack Singler, 6-foot-6 sophomore Kamerun Smith and 5-foot-11 junior transfer Tanner Trosin. Howard said Singler has a slight edge over the other two heading into the spring game, but added that the battle will probably rage on well into fall camp. “Jack Singler is in the lead right now,” Howard said. “He’s working with the first unit, and we’ll rotate them all in with the first unit in the spring game. But nobody has emerged as the clear-cut starter yet, and we hope we’ll see that (tonight). We just want somebody to take command of the offense and we’re waiting for that to happen. Each one of them has had their days of consistency, but consistency is an important part of it.” Howard said Singler, Smith and Trosin each have different strengths and weaknesses. Singler, a South Medford High alum, has made the fewest mistakes and moves well in the pocket. “(Singler) makes good decisions, and right now he’s been running very well, scrambling around and making plays,” Howard said. “What I tell the quarterbacks is the guy that gets our team into the end zone the most is going to be our starter, and when (Singler’s) in there we’ve moved the ball the most consistently and scored the most.” Smith, from Marist High in Eugene, was Dodge’s backup as a freshman last season but rarely saw the field, completing 16 of 23 passes for 121 yards. A classic drop-back passer, Smith probably has the strongest arm on the team. Now, he must take the next step, Howard said. “He’s confident, so now he needs to really step up and be the guy,” Howard said. “He’s got the tools, so now it’s time for him to get on the horse and ride it. He’s got a great arm and he’s smart, but again, there’s been a lack of consistency. Some days he’s brilliant, and then the next day he’ll throw a couple picks.” Trosin, who passed for 2,268 yards last season at American River College (Calif.), is a dual-threat quarterback whose athleticism has vaulted him into contention. “He’s just a real competitive young man and an excellent runner who can bring a different dimension to the offense when he’s in,” Howard said. “But he’s still learning the offense. The other guys know the offense better, but (Trosin’s) competitive spirit puts him in the hunt.” The 25 players for each spring game team were chosen with competitive balance in mind. The game will be played with a running clock, except for the last two minutes of each half. Howard said SOU’s running back corps has had a great spring, with sophomore Keegan Lawrence emerging as a threat to earn a starting nod. “He looks like an All-American,” Howard said. Those running backs could see some big holes behind an offensive line that returns three starters — left tackle Tylor King, right guard Dylan Bratlie and left guard Max Proudfit. At center, Howard is excited about the addition of transfer Jose Sanchez. Not helping to clear up SOU’s quarterback battle is the team’s injury woes at receiver. Sean McShane and Jeremy Scottow both are expected to miss the game, and Matt Retzlaff, the team’s top returner in terms of receiving yards and touchdown receptions, will be a game-time decision. Defensively, Howard likes what he’s seen from the secondary, specifically safety Julius Rucker and cornerback Karrington Jones. Their athleticism has allowed SOU to play a more aggressive press defense, which has made life difficult on the receivers. Five months before their season-opener against Carroll, the Raiders, ranked No. 1 in the NAIA spring coaches’ poll, are still getting used to the reality that they are the defending national champions. The run to the title was special for so many reasons, Howard said, but it’s time to move on. “It still kind of seems unreal that we did it, but now we turn around and we’ve gotta do it again,” he said. “You’re only as good as your next game or your next season.”  Joe Zavala can be reached at 541-821-0829 or [email protected].
