Unwanted fruit wanted for community cider Wednesday Oct 12, 2016 at 4:46 PM Oct 12, 2016 at 4:47 PM The Applegate Valley's Apple Outlaw Cider and Ashland Food Co-op are planning to make a one of a kind “community cider.” Community members can bring their unwanted, overripe or fallen apples, pears and plums to the Co-op on Friday, Oct. 14, and Saturday, Oct. 15. Apple Outlaw will collect the fruit and create a hard cider dubbed “Apple Outlaw Community Cider.” Apple Outlaw hopes to collect enough fruit to make a sufficient batch of hard cider that will be bottled and available for purchase in the Co-op’s beer and wine department. The previous two collection weekends have yielded nearly 1,800 pounds of fruit. Only pears, plums and apples are being collected.  Apple Outlaw hopes to release its Community Cider through the Co-op in February. The Ashland Food Co-op is a certified organic retailer and cooperative grocery, with more than 10,000 members. In addition to food, the Co-Op offers cooking classes, local farm tours, in-store tastings, free lectures and donates thousands of dollars to local nonprofits each year through its Community Grants program. Apple Outlaw is a family owned orchard and cidery located in the Applegate Valley. Its certified organic orchard has more than 1,000 trees and many varieties.
