To help achieve that, the Ashland Emergency Food Bank will be accepting donations during the Pacific Rim Bowl Game tonight. Please do your best to deposit an item of nonperishable food in the collection bins near the entrances to the stadium. Your donations will be put to great use in assisting our community and the hundreds of individuals and families our food bank is so happy to serve. Jackson Lemhouse Ashland High School Senior Go metric The federal government has, for decades, been trying to convert the United States to the metric system. As most people know, this is the system of weights and measures used by the entire world — with the exception of the United States (and Liberia and Myanmar, although they may have since converted, too). I believe the American people would like to join with the rest of the world and adopt this universal measurement standard. The problem seems to be that a change this profound is difficult to achieve nationally. I propose that the conversion might need to be introduced more gradually. We all know that many big changes can occur state by state until they reach critical mass and are adopted nationally. To that end I suggest that Oregon be the first state to officially adopt the metric system. That would be worldwide recognition of Oregon as the progressive, forward thinking place that it is. Soon the other states, one by one, would fall into line, then the country as a whole. But, Oregon will forever have been the first. It’s important that the change be made abruptly, not a piecemeal rollout over several years and not either/or. That just doesn’t work. We would need to proclaim that on Jan. 1, Oregon will totally go metric. Gas pumps would sell gasoline in liters, supermarkets would sell apples by the kilo and the highway signs would covert to kilometers ( not  both mph and km/h, that’s already been tried). Cars already have km/h scales on their speedometers and scales can be converted to metric with a simple mouse click. And, since most people are already basically familiar with the system, in a month it would all be second nature. Let Oregon show the way! Bob Beggs Ashland What happened to Ashland? I came to Ashland a couple of weeks ago to visit my sister who lives there. I was looking forward to spending time shopping with her in your wonderful shops downtown. The last time I was in Ashland my sister and I stopped and got a little snack and spent some quality time sitting and chatting in the shade on the lovely plaza downtown. But, what happened? The beautiful plaza that I remember is gone and replaced by gray (asphalt-colored?) pavers. And where are the beautiful big trees? It was not inviting at all. We cut our shopping time short and went home to have our snack and chat. What a disappointment it was! I hope that there is something you can do to restore that sleepy, small-town, vintage feeling to your plaza and downtown area. Linda Pupols Oceanside, Calif.
