What do I take? Should we drive separate cars or go together?” As we talked through the general stuff including important papers, computer hard drive, babies, diapers, cats and cat food, chargers, snacks, medications, toys and a few other seemingly necessary things, I remained calm on the outside, but was quite concerned for her and her family. I realized that if I was impacted that much by her evacuation how much more she was affected and why it would be so difficult to really figure out what to take. I mentioned in the last column that we are launching a new program called "Ready! Set! Go!" Ready, set and go represent the three levels of evacuation and coordinate with the colors green, yellow and red, respectively. The green Level 1 is to be READY. This means that you have a “go kit” with some of the basics listed above. The go kit should have everything you need to survive a few days away from your home. It should include the stuff necessary for anyone evacuating with you, including the people and furry members of the family. Being READY also means that you have an evacuation plan in place, including a place to meet that is away from your neighborhood. We are encouraging EVERYONE to be READY all the time, especially during fire season. The yellow Level 2 evacuation is to be SET. If your neighborhood receives a Level 2 evacuation notice, you need to be ready to evacuate at a moment’s notice. Your car should be packed. Level 2 means that significant danger is approaching. Augment your “go kit” with everything you need for two weeks. Listen for updates on the evacuation through Citizen Alert (www.ashland.or.us/alert). The red Level 3 evacuation means that you need to leave now and that danger is imminent. This is time to follow your evacuation plan and leave the area. Continue to stay informed through Citizen Alert, the city website, and the wildfire hotline (541-552-2490). Admittedly, the prospect of being evacuated is scary; however, taking the time to be READY in advance will make the process easier to bear. If you have not received notice to evacuate, but you see danger heading your way or you are uncomfortable, evacuate. There are some situations in which there is no time for emergency responders to provide an evacuation notice. While we are rolling out the Ready! Set! Go! campaign in the summer, it applies year round. If there is a flood evacuation notice, we will still use the same levels. We encourage you to get your “go kit” started with your whole family and make an evacuation plan. Stop by Ashland Fire Station 1 to pick up a handy magnet to remind you of the process, and check out our website at www.ashland.or.us/evacuation. Encourage friends and family throughout Jackson and Josephine county to use the RVEM.org website to prepare.
