Parks and Recreation Commission results will take time By Ian Hand Ashland Daily Tidings DailyTidings.com By Ian Hand Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Nov. 4, 2014 @ 2:00 am Updated Nov 4, 2014 at 9:21 PM By Ian Hand Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Nov. 4, 2014 @ 2:00 am Updated Nov 4, 2014 at 9:21 PM » Social News While early returns show Parks and Recreation Commissioners Rick Landt and Mike Gardiner retaining their seats on the commission, it may be a few days before results of the write-in contest between Katy Repp and Matthew Miller for position 4 are known. An 8 p.m. count from the Jackson County Elections Office shows Landt and Gardiner, both running uncontested, with 98.81 percent and 98.38 percent of the votes for their respective positions. Landt returns for his third term on the commission (his second consecutively). Gardiner was first elected in 2002, leaving after two consecutive terms. He returned to the commission by appointment to a vacant position in January 2012. Because write-in votes need to be counted by hand, the early count simply shows the number of votes cast for a write-in candidate, but not who the candidate was. An unofficial count for the contest between Repp and Miller may be made available later in the week. The five person commission controls and manages all city land designated for park purposes. They have the power to adopt by-laws, rules and regulations for the conduct of public recreation in the city as well as coordinate the recreational facilities in the city and those to be created. Commissioners oversee around 40 staff members in the Parks and Recreaction Department and a nearly $16 million biennial budget. Current projects for the commission include upgrades to the Garfield Park waterplay feature, the construction of Ashland Creek Park and evaluation of park maintenance and development standards.
