Kiwanis recognizes senior students from AHS each month during the school year. Mikaela has been an enthusiastic and active student during her high school years. She has taken several Advanced Placement courses, including Pre-Calculus and Spanish 5. In addition, she has been active in sports programs, currently participating in soccer and golf. In soccer, she was a participant with her club’s soccer team during a trip to Sweden for the Youth World Cup. In golf, her AHS team finished first in a recent tournament and she came in second in individual scoring. Her extra-curricular activities include dance, as both a student and a teacher. Also, she was a recent Guanajuato Princess in Ashland’s Sister City activities. Her community activities include being an active member of her youth group at the First Baptist Church in Ashland. Mikaela plans to continue all of these activities while away in college. For her senior project, Mikaela has been a “Class Mom” at Bellview Elementary for one day a week over the past three months. In this role, she taught fifth graders a flash dance routine that the kids presented during their graduation ceremony. She spent some of her time teaching them “Footloose,” which turned into a huge success. After graduating from Ashland High School, Mikaela has been accepted at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, where she will major in sports management with a minor in Spanish. Mikaela hopes to become an athletic director of a high school, eventually moving up to an athletic director position at a college or university. Alternatively, she could be interested in being a manager of a major sports team. Mikaela received a Student of the Month award certificate and $50 in cash. During the month of May she, along with other award winners this school year, she will be eligible for the $1,000 Tommy Laird Kiwanis College scholarship.
