In its 16th year, the event, previously the Southern Oregon World of Wine, has a lineup of tastings, classes and auctions replete with live music, dancing, cuisine and award-winning Oregon wines. The five-day event kicks off on Wednesday, Aug. 24, and continues through Sunday, Aug. 28. All events will be held on the Bigham Knoll Campus, 525 E. E St., Jacksonville. Tickets and information about individual events and classes are available online at www.theoregonwineexperience.com . "I think the wineries are really stepping up to make this a fantastic event," says EdenVale Winery owner Anne Root. "People are really falling in love with this region." This annual event offers winemakers and wine enthusiasts the opportunity to get to know each other in a relaxed, informal environment. And this year, the melting pot expanded, Root says. This is the inaugural year that OWE has opened the competition to the entire state. Of the 68 participating wineries, 18 hail from regions outside Southern Oregon, including several from the Willamette Valley. "For the first time, local wine enthusiasts can try wines from around the state and do that right here. It's a huge bonus," says Oregon Wine Competition chairman Bruce Nicholson. The competition, the cornerstone of the OWE, was judged by six national wine experts earlier this month. Varietals come from as far away as the Walla Walla and Mount Hood regions, offering a generous selection of regional specialties. The official kickoff event, the Medal Celebration, starts 6 p.m. Wednesday. Medals from the Oregon Wine Competition will be announced, including gold, silver and best in show at this upscale event. Visitors can taste wines accompanied by culinary pairings. Artwork created for the event by local artists will be unveiled and go up for bid during the evening's auction. Live music will be performed by acoustic guitarist Steve Keim. Tickets are $200. The Barrel Auction returns for the second year from noon to 5 p.m. Friday. Beginning with lunch, visitors can sample local wines straight from the barrel in their most unrefined form as nine wineries open their varietals. Wines by the case will be available, and bids will be taken for barrels. Contemporary country trio Cherry Wine with Michael Quinn will play throughout the afternoon. Tickets are $200. The central attraction, the Miracle Auction & Salmon Bake will be held at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in Bigham Knoll's tent and ballroom. Local libations and culinary treats will be available, along with a buffet provided by local chefs. Members of the Coquille Indian Tribe will cook salmon using an age-old, traditional wood-plank method. In the silent and live auctions, items up for bid include vintages designated 100-point wines by The Wine Advocate, a bi-monthly wine publication established in 1978 by American wine critic Robert M. Parker, along with vacation packages and hand-painted art barrels. There will be live music by soulful rock band Mercy featuring singer Lynda Morrison. Tickets are $200. The Grand Tasting will take place at 2 pm. Sunday. During this final event, visitors can meet the winemakers and taste more than 100 wines from the participating wineries. Local acoustic duo The Fret Drifters will close out the week's festivities with live music. Tickets are $100. The Oregon Wine University will continue its 2016 Wine Discovery Series classes through the week. Apart from a handful of classes leading up to the official wine week, two classes will be offered during the week. Tuesday's class, Wine 101, will demonstrate how to evaluate wine, pair wines and food, choose wines and discern tasting notes. On Thursday, Riedel Glass will demonstrate proper glasses to use for certain varietals, and participants can sample four wines in different glasses to understand how the shape of a glass affects taste. These classes begin at 6 p.m. in the Bigham Knoll tent. Tickets cost $39 and $68, respectively. All proceeds from Oregon Wine Experience will benefit the Asante Children's Miracle Network. The money will help fund the building of a new pediatric procedure and treatment room, and donors at the event can also contribute to programs such as cost-free housing for families of patients, education and cancer compassion funds. "I think that's an amazing place to put our money. It's a great cause," Root says. She's served on Asante boards for several years, and her twin sons were treated in a neonatal intensive care unit at Asante, making the partnership with Asante particularly special for her. Last year, the OWE raised over half a million dollars for the Asante CMN. Wineries like EdenVale donate thousands of dollars' worth of their time, energy and resources for this event.
