Four Raiders pick up weekly honors DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Sep. 29, 2014 @ 5:22 pm Posted Sep. 29, 2014 @ 5:22 pm » Social News A memorable weekend in Southern Oregon University sports culminated Monday morning with four Raiders being named conference players of the week, one earning a national award and SOU volleyball getting Cascade Conference Adidas Team of the Week kudos. Volleyball players Brookelynn Cole and Paulla Pinheiro were honored, as were football players Heston Altenbach and Austin Dodge after their 45-24 win at Montana State-Northern. The 14th-ranked SOU volleyball team (12-3 overall, 6-1 CCC) swept a pivotal weekend against conference rivals, taking down 11th-ranked Eastern Oregon in five sets Friday and defending CCC champion College of Idaho in four Saturday. They had to rally both nights, as they trailed the Mountaineers 17-11 in the fourth set and the Coyotes 18-11 in the fourth set. Pinheiro was the CCC hitter of the week. She totaled a career-high 25 kills Friday – three of which broke match-point in the fifth set – and had 15 more the next night, putting her in double figures for the fifth straight match. She also had 10 digs Saturday (after recording nine the previous night) for her sixth double-double of the season. Cole, a senior libero, was the defensive player of the week for collecting 50 digs. She controlled the back row for the Raiders, helping them make EOU and C of I their 10th and 11th straight opponents who failed to reach a .200 hitting average. Dodge's selection as both NAIA and Frontier Conference offensive player of the week was a no-brainer. The senior quarterback broke the NAIA career records for touchdown passes and passing yards, going 22-for-38 with six TDs and 417 yards while pushing seventh-ranked SOU's record to 5-0. His career totals stand at 121 TD passes and 13,461 passing yards after his fourth six-TD game in the last two seasons. Altenbach, a senior linebacker, had six solo and four assisted tackles to attain defensive player of the week status. Following his lead, the Raiders have allowed just one fourth-quarter touchdown in four Frontier contests.   Water polo wins The Ashland High boys and girls water polo teams swept South Salem on Sunday, with the boys winning 15-7 and the girls 15-12. Tristan Gavin scored four goals, Michael Loop added two plus three steals and Loden Donahoo had 11 blocks to lead the AHS boys. For the girls, Kyilyn Boehm had 13 blocks and Sabrina Scoggin eight goals and four steals.
