Submitted photo The Ashland Elks Lodge No. 944 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks was one out of 53 lodges that received an Impact Grant from the Elks National Foundation. Currently, there are 2,100 Elk Lodges and these limited grants are available annually. The grant is in the amount of $10,000 and will be used to help veterans who are completing rehabilitation and transitioning to an independent living environment. The Ashland Lodge is working with Veteran’s Administration Southern Oregon Rehabilitation Center and Clinics (VA SORCC), which will distribute 100 starter homemaker kits for these veterans as they typically do not have any means to purchase items as they start their new beginning. Starter homemaker Kits are necessary as these veterans have limited personal items when enter VA SORCC and when they transition to a Housing and Urban Development home. Each kit includes sheets, blanket, pillow, forks, spoons, knives, coffee pot, dishes, mugs, glasses, toaster, saucepan, sauté, fry pan, bath towel, hand towel, dish towel, can opener, broom, dust pan and two utility wash towels.
