Phillips Field at Ashland High School. The Ashland Schools Foundation launched a final push 10 days ago and raised $95,000 to upgrade the multi-sport artificial turf field to a natural fill rather than rubber. The field will be built by Hellas, a sports facility construction company, and will feature their “Geoturf” fill, an all-natural product made of ground up cork, coconut fiber and rice fiber rather than crumb rubber. When completed, it will be the first of its kind in the state of Oregon. The field will be expanded from its current size to accommodate both football and boys and girls soccer teams beginning this fall. It will also be made available to youth and adult sports leagues in the community. After the Ashland community raised the $95,000, the School Board voted unanimously Wednesday to approve a $275,000 lighting contract for the stadium. The board had already authorized the expenditure of $100,000 from capital funds for engineering, design and legal costs. The project kicked off more than a year ago with the announcement of a $650,000 gift from Ashland alum and major league pitcher Jeremy Guthrie. Lithia Motors contributed a $100,000 gift, along with substantial personal gifts from Lithia founder Sid DeBoer and his wife Karen, and current president, Bryan DeBoer and his wife Stephanie. According to a release from the school foundation, on the final day of fundraising, Lithia Motors and Bryan and Stephanie DeBoer stepped up with additional donations to close the final fundraising gap.
