Michele Fecteau made a quick stop at the US Bank on North Second Street on Thursday afternoon. The five-year resident of Ashland thought she would have plenty of time before a — p.m. doctor& s appointment. Wrapping up her banking 20 minutes before — p.m., she was on track. But Fecteau paused on her way toward the door because a man in 20s wearing blue overalls and a dark-colored baseball cap pulled low over his eyes caught her attention. & He was acting really nervous, you know, that nervous energy,& Fecteau said via cell phone while she drove to her appointment at 3:10 p.m. The man walked to the teller window next to the one Fecteau had used, handed a note to the teller demanding cash and said he had a gun in his pocket. & He was right next to me,& Fecteau said, adding she& d would have never thought there would be a bank robbery in Ashland. The teller handed over an undisclosed amount of money. Ashland Police Department officials did not disclose the amount. Then the man turned an ran out the east door of the bank and into the parking lot. Not knowing what to do, Fecteau ran after him. & I followed him out the door,& she said. & He was gone.& The man fled north from the scene on foot. He was last seen running down an alley in the area of C and B streets, between Second and Third streets, according to APD Sgt. Teresa Selby. Fecteau walked back inside the bank. APD officers arrived on scene minutes later and locked down the bank to interview witnesses. APD officers, two Oregon State Police troopers, an FBI agent, four officers from the Medford Police Department and one police dog, scoured Ashland streets for the suspect all afternoon. APD released an all-state bulletin asking other law enforcement agencies to be on the lookout for the suspect. & Right now we& re just following down witness leads, processing evidence,& Selby said. & It& s just all leg-work, interview-type stuff now.& Police describe the suspect as a thin-built, 6-foot-tall white man with blond hair. He may have been wearing dark-colored athletic-type shoes. The bank was closed for the afternoon while investigators interviewed witnesses. Customers were directed to US Bank branches in north and south Medford. & Just my luck, I couldn& t cash my check,& said Ashland resident Dinah Breakell, who arrived at the bank just before — p.m. to find the doors locked and a sign explaining & the office is temporarily closed due to an emergency& in the window. Dozens of people saw the notice and one person who& d parked in the US Bank lot called APD headquarters to make sure it was safe to retrieve the vehicle. The bank reopened today. The US Bank branch was robbed on Dec. 24, 2002. In December 2004, Ashland resident Nathaniel Bosworth, then 22, pleaded guilty to the heist and a Nov. 19, 2002, robbery of the Klamath First Federal bank (now Sterling Savings Bank) at 512 Walker Ave. The Klamath First was robbed a second time, in early 2003. No one was ever indicted in that case.
