LOCAL ROUNDUP Gabe Lehrburger, Grizzlies clean house in MWL all-star voting Lehrburger named league POY, one of Ashland's five all-stars By Joe Zavala DailyTidings.com By Joe Zavala Posted Nov. 10, 2014 @ 8:26 pm By Joe Zavala Posted Nov. 10, 2014 @ 8:26 pm » Social News The Ashland High boys soccer team’s first season as a member of the Midwestern League was a huge success and the league’s coaches have rewarded the Grizzlies accordingly. Gabe Lehrburger was named the MWL’s co-player of the year and was one of five Grizzlies that the coaches voted first- or second-team all stars, and Ashland co-head coaches Brad Roupp and Abdiaziz Guled were named the co-coaches of the year. The Grizzlies also landed three honorable mentions, giving them eight selections overall, more than any other school in the seven-team conference. Marist senior Josh Escobar and Churchill junior Marcos Canales were also voted co-players of the year. Ashland won five of six league games to take the Midwestern title and beat Liberty in the first round of the 5A state playoffs before falling to Woodburn on Saturday in the state quarterfinals. Lehrburger, a senior left fullback, twin brother and senior sweeper David Lehrburger and senior forward Lucas Golding all earned first-team all-league honors for the Grizzlies. Ashland’s second-team picks were senior Cole Coster and junior Graycen Kennedy, and its honorable mentions were senior goalkeeper Tejas Leier Heyden and freshmen Ian Rinefort and Ben Lucero. The Lehrburger twins led a defense that held Ashland opponents to one goal during a six-game win streak that righted the Grizzlies’ ship following a rough 0-3 start to the season. Marist, which finished tied with Churchill for second in the MWL standings, also had five all conference picks, including three first-teamers. Churchill had four. Eagle Point had three all-conference selections — first-team pick Conner Brown, a senior; second-team pick Sebastian Tovar, a junior; and second-team goalie Jonel Quintero, a senior. Crater senior Cyrus Irigoyen, a second-team selection, was the only Comet to make the all-star team. Crater senior Erix Jensen was an honorable mention.
