On Nov. 13, the Ashland Kiwanis Club and the Ashland Lions Club each presented a $500 check to the Nature Center to support their School Program Scholarships. This is the fifth consecutive year that the two Ashland service clubs have teamed up for these donations, for a total of $5,000 donated in that timeframe. This fund was initiated in the fall of 2010 as a way to support kindergarten through fifth-grade field trips to North Mountain Park Nature Center. The field trip programs are taught in fall and spring and cover six local topics: geology, water, plants, animals, Native Americans and history. All field trips teach appreciation for and stewardship of the local natural environment. Teachers are asked to raise some classroom funds to pay for these field trips. However, thanks to the scholarship fund, all teachers who register for programs may request a scholarship to cover up to 50 percent of their fee. Ashland Kiwanis offers many programs to support children and community activities. Ashland Lions’ main focus is to improve sight and hearing, eradicate preventable blindness and improve education relative to those concerns.
