She was a beautiful woman with a beautiful spirit. She was born December 3, 1924 in Hermosa Beach, Calif. Charlene Aymee Weddington was the only child of Hal (Bill) and Stella Weddington. She came from a family of lifeguards, telephone operators, an oil field foreman, a seafood purveyor, and a prison warden. Charlene was Valedictorian of her 1942 graduating class. She married the charming and handsome Bert Townsend in 1953 and had two boys, Hal (Scooter) and Lee. They were hard-working people and the kind of parents who always put their kids first. She loved music and playing fiddle duets with her father. She reached the 1st violinist chair in the Los Angeles Youth Orchestra. Charlene was the resident accordion player for family sing-alongs, and sang in the church choir and Sweet Adelines. She was an inveterate animal lover. Her home was a refuge, not only for stray dogs and cats, but rescue animals such as ducks, rabbits, and desert tortoises. She later moved to Mountain Meadows in Ashland and enjoyed swimming at the YMCA and playing pinochle with her friends. Charlene made the world a brighter and more positive place. She was loved dearly by her family and devoted group of friends. Hers were ninety-one years well-lived that are celebrated by these surviving family members who already miss her deeply: Her sons Hal (Scooter) and Lee Townsend; their wives Mary and Phyllis; grandchildren Hannah, Eva, and Eli; her stepson, Jerry and wife, Gloria, and her kitty, Boogie. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 19, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church, 175 N. Main, Ashland, Ore., 97520.
