Writers Workshop for Kids: Stories Alive will offer free writer's workshops for elementary age children from 3 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays and 1 to 3 p.m. Mondays in January at the Ashland library, 410 Siskiyou Blvd. Children will craft original stories and turn them into a live production to be shown on May 17 at Southern Oregon University. Learn to Ice Skate: Drop-in ice skating lessons are offered for children and adults from 5 to 6 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays through Feb. 25 at the Ashland Rotary Centennial Ice Rink, 95 Winburn Way. Recreational skate admission rates apply, but skate rental is included with the lesson. Cost is free for children younger than 5, $3.50 for ages 6 through 13, and $4 for 14 and older. Author Talk: Former Ashland City Councilor Alice Hardesty will discuss her book "An Uncommon Cancer Journey: The Cosmic Kick That Healed Our Lives" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, at Bloomsbury Books, 290 E. Main St., Ashland. The book tells the story of her husband Jack Hardesty's healing from esophageal cancer in the 1980s despite two terminal diagnoses. Alice Hardesty accompanied him on his journey as he tried alternative and complementary treatments. Along with physical healing came the healing of their marriage. Indie Concert: Portland-based Grand Lake Islands will perform with California singer/songwriter Robin Bacior at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, at Mix Sweet Shop, 57 N. Main St., Ashland. The Portland five-piece features influences of Americana and slide guitar blended with the distortion-heavy sound reminiscent of early Radiohead. The band is touring in support of their upcoming LP "Song From Far."
