Willie Ray Williams, 29, was taken into custody by Ashland Police Department detectives in a room at the Relax Inn on Clover Lane near Exit 19, the department said in a release issued Friday, May 20. The flurry of thefts peaked shortly before the arrest with 18 reports overnight during the evening of Tuesday, May 17, and morning of Wednesday, May 18, according to APD Deputy Chief Warren Hensman. The total number of thefts was approximately 40, he said, and there have been no further such reports since the arrest. No estimate of the total value of items stolen had been compiled yet, Hensman said. An unknown amount of cash was also taken from vehicles, he added, which makes coming up with a precise number more difficult. Investigation of the break-ins, plus a tip received by detectives, produced information leading authorities to obtain a search warrant for Williams' room. The search turned up a variety of stolen property, according to the release, plus methamphetamine and cocaine. Williams was booked into county jail on several counts of unlawful entry into a motor vehicle, theft, possession of a controlled substance and delivery of a controlled substance. He was still listed in custody Friday afternoon, May 20, facing a total of 33 charges with a total bail amount of $127,000. A person with same name and birthdate but an Irving, Texas, address has a criminal record in Jackson County dating back to June 2015, on a variety of charges including assault, stalking, possession of methamphetamine and violating a court protective order. The department encourages residents to lock car doors and remove all items of value, including handbags, wallets and electronic equipment, from their vehicles.
