Find prior chapters at www.dailytidings.com. Through a newly acquired sense of olfactory detection, I had discovered Sherry and her captors, a crow and a tall mummy, at Martino’s Bar during the Ashland Halloween Parade. The crowded bar provided enough distraction for a drugged Sherry to sneak out the back door leading to the Bowmer Theatre. Sherry ran in a sideways gait around the right side of the Bowmer down a narrow walkway. I followed, looking over my shoulder to make sure no one was in pursuit from Martino’s. So far, so good. The path ended at a large double door, which Sherry pulled open. I grabbed her elbow and she kicked me and we both staggered inside. I pulled her into a janitor’s closet. She kept hitting me wildly. “Sherry, it’s me. Dawn. Your sister. Look at me.” She froze and stared at me, eyes wide. I could see duct tape across her mouth under the costume bandages. I ripped it off along with most of the mummy paper on her face. “Owww.” She wobbled and sat down hard on the concrete floor. “Sherry. Are you OK? What did they do to you?” I sat and pulled her into a hug. “Dawn. Help me. I …,” and then she mumbled something unintelligible. “It’s OK. I’m gonna get you outta here.” Yeah, right. I had no idea what I was doing. “My head hurts.” Sherry slumped against me, breathing heavily. We heard footsteps and voices in the hall. Then silence. “Stay here and try to take off those bandages. Lock the door. I’ll be right back.” I peeked out. No one was there, so I snuck out down the hall. We were backstage at the Bowmer. I saw racks of costumes. I heard more voices and hid. There were stagehands, in costume, setting up for the show. Then icy water shot up my spine. The tall, mean mummy stalked by me toward the stage. I grabbed two beaded sheaths off the rack, ran back and knocked on the closet door. Sherry opened it. Dressed in our '20s attire, with Sherry leaning on me, bandages dragging, we walked down the hall until we came to a backstage lounge. “Let’s get you some water. Sit down.” I found some bottled water in the fridge. I went to the door and peaked out. How could I get her out of here? I had to think. There was a heavy volume of Shakespeare’s complete plays on the table. From behind the door, I yelled, “Sherry. Sherry is that you?” Sherry looked at me perplexed and I shushed her with my finger. Suddenly, the mummy stuck his head in the door and I bashed him with the giant book. Then I bashed him again until he fell down, passed out cold. Sherry and I dragged him over to the couch. I found a hot glue gun and started fixing him to the couch with long streaks of gooey, yellow glue. He woke up once and Sherry bashed him again with Mr. Shakespeare. As a final touch, I glued his lips together and his eyelids shut. Later that night, as Sherry sat in my living room, drinking tea with Babycakes in her lap, we turned on the 11 o’clock news. “Tonight in a bizarre turn of events at the Bowmer Theatre, a moaning mummy wearing a couch staggered onstage during Act I of 'Cocoanuts' and collapsed. OSF has no comment at this time. Stay tuned.” Next week: We meet Sherry and Dawn's seven-times married mother, now a sex therapist living south of Medford.       By Lyda Woods DailyTidings.com By Lyda Woods Posted Nov. 18, 2014 at 2:00 AM Updated Jan 5, 2015 at 10:02 AM » Comment or view comments   Reader Reaction »  STAY INFORMED   Email NewsLetter   Sign Up Today   Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox.
