Nick Sanderson went 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs, Kyle Milgram 3-for-5 with an RBI and Jesse Carroll 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs as the Grizzlies pounded 15 hits in their first-ever MWL baseball game. In a game that originally scheduled to be played Tuesday before a rain shower forced a postponement, Ashland erased a 5-3 deficit and broke the game open with nine hits in the third, including two-run doubles by both Sanderson and Carroll. “As a team we build off of the performance of the guy next to you or in front of you in the lineup and hitting is contagious,” Ashland coach Mike Kenask said. “And everybody in the lineup one through nine contributed today.” Tarquin Daley was 1-for-3 with an RBI for the Grizzlies (6-1), who travel to Eugene on Saturday for a doubleheader against the Millers. For Springfield (5-4), Alec Cook hit a double and Kyle Shill a triple. Steen Fredrickson improved to 4-0 on the mound, striking out four and walking three in 4 2/3 innings before giving way to Milgram. Ashland scored three runs in the first to reclaim the momentum after the Millers scored a run in the top of the inning. Springfield jumped on Fredrickson in the second to go up 5-3 and still had the same lead heading into the home half of the third. But that’s when Ashland jumped on Springfield starter Bryson McKee and reliever Mike Dougherty. Sanderson, a sophomore first baseman, and Carroll, a sophomore outfielder/pitcher, both had two hits in the inning, with Sanderson’s shot hitting the top of the wall in right. “A victory today proves us today, but we still have to work hard tomorrow,” Kenask said. “That being said, getting the win today reinforces the fact that we belong among the competition that surrounds us. We were happy to get our first conference win and it’s one step in the midst of a long journey.” The Grizzlies will try to make it a sweep of Springfield on Saturday. It will be the last games of the season between the two teams, as the MWL season consists of six three-game series between each of the league’s seven teams for a total of 18 games. “We’re only as good as we are today and whoever works harder over next two days, that will show in the results on Saturday,” Kenask said. “We cannot rest and we are not satisfied.” Springfield 140 110 0 – 7 8 2 Ashland 30(11) 001 x – 15 15 5 McKee, Dougherty (3), Hinton (3) and Guy; Fredrickson, Milgram (5) and Hamik. Carroll, Sanderson 2. 3B – S: Shill.   Prep Softball Anay Philpott’s RBI double with two outs in the bottom of the eighth gave Ashland a 5-4 win over Crater in the Midwestern League opener for both teams Wednesday at North Mountain Park. Gianni Pippa-Baker delivered a one-out single and scored from first on Philpott’s hit to left-center field. Ashland (5-2) tied the game in the bottom of the seventh when Delaney Rodriguez scored on an error. Teresa Lehman was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Pippa-Baker 2-for-4 with two runs for the Grizzlies, who travel to Eugene today to take on Churchill. Ashland pitcher Georgia Williams gave up two earned runs on six hits in a complete-game performance. She struck out six and walked two.
