Baldrica, a senior, won the 800-meter dash in 2 minutes, 41.91 seconds, the long jump with a leap of 14 feet, 11 ¼ inches and was runner-up in the 200 in 30.28 to lead the Grizz girls, who fell 84-60. Thompson-Siporen, a senior, placed first in the shot put with a throw of 47-4 ¾ and also won the discus with a 159-10 throw for the AHS boys, who also lost 84-60. Elshalom, a junior won the long jump (19-10) and triple jump (41-2). Tess Gibs, Skyler Zundel, Lilianne Smith and Kelsey McKelvey also won events for the Ashland girls. Gibs, a freshman, placed first in the 1,500 in 5:34.96; Zundel, a junior, won the 3,000 in 14 minutes flat; Smith, a freshman, won the shot put with a 30-10 mark; and McKelvey won the javelin with a 129-05 heave and also placed second in the triple jump (26-2 ½). For the Ashland boys, Shashi Penn and Joshua Griffen also were victorious. Penn, a junior, won the 100 in 11.79 and was the long jump runner up (19-9), while Griffen, a senior, won the javelin (130-10). Also for the AHS boys, freshman Ian Rinefort placed second in the 400 (52.58) and third in the 200 (24.65). Ashland’s next dual is Tuesday at Eagle Point. Prep Baseball Steen Fredrickson struck out 14 batters in a complete-game gem to lead Ashland to a 4-2 Midwestern League victory over Eagle Point on Wednesday at North Mountain Park. The hard-throwing senior, who improved to 5-0, took a no-hitter into the sixth before settling for a two-hitter as Eagle Point was held to one earned run in a game that was originally scheduled for Tuesday before being rained out. “Steen was really on top of his game,” Ashland coach Mike Kenask said of Fredrickson, who struck out the side in the third and fifth innings. “He had his fastball working and he was throwing smoke today and missing bats.” The win improved the Grizzlies to 9-1 overall and 4-0 in the MWL, while the Eagles fell to 2-7 and 0-4. Nick Sanderson, Jerry Carroll, TarQuin Daley and Matt Flynn each batted in runs for the Grizzlies, who have won six straight and play a doubleheader at Eagle Point on Saturday. Prep Softball At Central Point, Crater pitcher Brittany Hassel struck out 13 batters to help the Comets hand Ashland its first Midwestern League loss, 9-2, on Wednesday. Ashland’s Grace Lenthe belted a two-run home run in the fourth inning but that was a rare mistake for Hassel, who notched the complete-game victory. The loss dropped Ashland to 8-3 overall and 2-1 in league play while Crater improved to 2-8 and 1-2. Crater’s Abbi Pearce was 3-for-3 with two runs, Simone Turituri had two hits and an RBI and Brie Sheperd also had two hits. College Softball Southern Oregon pulled out one of its most impressive wins of the season in the first game then had to settle for a split after blowing a 6-0 lead in the second against 12th-ranked Oregon Tech on Wednesday at University Field. The Raiders (27-19, 8-10 Cascade Conference) jumped out to a 4-0 lead then withstood OIT’s comeback attempt to take the opener 6-4, then watched the Owls storm back behind three home runs to take the second game 8-7. Oregon Tech improved to 31-10, 15-4 in the Cascade Conference. Ally Painter went 3-for-4 with a run and Megan Winton 2-for-2 with two RBIs to lead the Raiders in Game 1. In Game 2, SOU leadoff hitter Kelsey Randall went 3-for-4, stole two bases and scored three times. Also for the Raiders, Krystina Pardoski went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple and two RBIs.
