The 5 worst 'American Idol' auditions in the show's history Comment Posted May. 13, 2015 @ 10:39 am With the 14th season of Fox’s “American Idol” set to conclude tonight, and news earlier this week that the show’s upcoming 15th season will be its last, we thought there was only one way to pay tribute to the show: by rounding up the worst auditions in the show’s history. (Hey, not everyone can be Kelly Clarkson.) 1. William Hung (Season 3) No “Idol” audition got as much attention as UC Berkeley civil engineering student William Hung’s, who regaled judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson with his ear-splitting rendition of Ricky Martin’s “She Bangs.” (Hung even landed a record deal thanks to his cult following from the show.) 2. James Lewis (Season 7) Pennsylvania tour guide James Lewis’s version of “Go Down Moses” is another “Idol” audition that lives on in infamy. Proclaiming that his speciality is “anything that’s low,” Lewis launched into a singing voice that sounds nothing like his speaking voice, and nothing like a voice we’ve ever heard come out of a human being’s mouth. 3. Martik Manoukian (Season 6) You’d think summoning your spirit animal to help you power your way through your “Idol” audition wouldn’t be a bad idea, but Season 6 auditionee Martik Manoukian took things a little too far. The look on the judge’s faces as he takes of his shirt and crawls across the stage says it all. It didn’t help that his version of “Sweetest Princess” left a bit to be desired. 4. Rhonetta Johnson (Season 6) Rhonetta Johnson had no shortage of confidence (and personality) before her audition, telling host Ryan Seacrest that she was going to be “bigger than J-Lo,” but once she got into the room with the judges, she got nervous and had trouble getting through a single line of her chosen song. “I’ll still make it though,” Johnson said afterward, taking a shot at Paula Abdul. 5. Larry Platt (Season 9) Few “Idol” auditions were as meme-worthy as Atlanta resident “General” Larry Platt’s energetic version of his original song, “Pants on the Ground.” The judges sat through the tryout like troopers, and charitably told Platt that the only reason they had to pass on him is that he passed the “Idol” age limit: 28.
