FOOD Organic raw macadamia nuts sold at Ashland Food Co-op recalled due to salmonella risk Comment By Local report DailyTidings.com By Local report Posted Mar. 16, 2016 at 7:34 PM By Local report Posted Mar. 16, 2016 at 7:34 PM » Social News Organic raw macadamia nuts sold at the Ashland Food Co-op from Jan. 5 to Feb. 4 have been recalled because they could be contaminated with salmonella, according to reports from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Co-op. The Co-op is recalling just more than 41 pounds of nuts, according to its website, after its supplier, Hummingbird, notified the Co-op of the potential hazard. The macadamia nuts were sold in random weight, clear cellophane bags with a one-month shelf life if refrigerated. The packages had an Ashland Food Co-op bulk label. Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems, according to the FDA. Healthy persons infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the Co-op macadamia nuts. Anyone who bought organic raw macadamia nuts with the Co-op bulk label between Jan. 5 and Feb. 4 should not eat the nuts. The nuts should be returned to the Co-op for a full refund. Consumers with questions can call the Co-op at 541-482-2237 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
