The Jackson County Medical Examiner's Office identified the man as Steven Craig Halverson, 46. His next of kin have been notified, the Jackson County Sheriff's Department said in a release Friday. Halverson was reported missing to Phoenix police on Aug. 27 and last was seen in the area of Luman Road. Detectives were able to identify Halverson based on tattoos and other physical features, the release said. Sheriff's department Sgt. Eric Fox said Halverson's death is believed to have occurred between one and two months ago. The cause of death is still under investigation, but investigators don't believe he was killed by someone else. His body was found at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday by a passerby in a section of the creek south of Phoenix that was not easily visible from the Bear Creek Greenway path because of heavy vegetation.
