It's true that no one in this country need suffer from the kind of malnutrition and starvation seen in parts of the Third World. But that does not mean no one needs help. The U.S. Department of Agriculture each year issues a report on "food insecurity" nationally. The USDA defines a family as food insecure if, at some point during the year, they have difficulty providing enough food for everyone in the household. That doesn't mean every day, or even every week. But for many, it can mean every month, when the food stamps or the paychecks, or both, run out. How many? The USDA says more than 232,000 Oregon households from 2011 to 2013. And more than 90,000 suffered "very low food security," meaning they ate less, watered down food, skipped meals or went without food for entire days. Local relief efforts are important, and so is the Empty Bowls Supper, an annual fundraiser that helps support the organizations that do this work, including Food Angels, the Ashland Food Bank, ACCESS and Uncle Foods Diner. Volunteers last week to made clay bowls at the Ashland Art Center. On May 8, attendees at the annual supper will eat soup from the bowls and take one home as a reminder. Tickets are $25.
