It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we're liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others." —Marianne Williamson   » Social News Famed New Age author and speaker Marianne Williamson will speak in Ashland Feb. 11 on “Love As a Spiritual Revolution.” The fundraiser for Havurah Shir Hadash will be held at Mountain Avenue Theater. In securing the much-in-demand speaker, Rabbi David Zaslow said he was drawn by her universal spiritual messages, which “overlap the spiritual traditions of Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and Buddism.” Williamson is the author of 10 books, including, “A Return to Love,” “A Woman’s Worth” and “Healing the Soul of America: Reclaiming Our Voices as Spiritual Citizens.” Her books have sold more than 3 million copies; four have made the New York Times bestseller list. “The essence of her teachings is simple, yet profound,” says Zaslow. “There are moments in life when we realize that we do have a choice about how we respond to painful situations. As the Buddha taught, choosing our emotional response may not stop the pain, but it certainly stops the suffering that comes from responding with anger or despondency." Williams teaches a class every Monday evening in Los Angeles, based on “A Course in Miracles,” which “is like New Thought with a Christian spin.” Zaslow says he attended her class and was inspired about how Williamson used the book as an “inspirational, accessible and practical” tool, making her seem “an authentic spiritual teacher … kind of a rabbi or minister who is able to communicate very profound spiritual ideas in a manner that people of all faiths can understand.” Williamson was born to a Jewish family in Texas in 1952. She is founder of Project Angel Food, which serves home-bound people with AIDS in Los Angeles. She campaigns to establish a U.S. Department of Peace. She ran for her district's Congressial seat in 2014, finishing fourth, and is a prime mover behind Sister Giant, which helps women run for office. She was a cabaret singer, ran a metaphysical bookstore and is a single mom. Zaslow says “I thought I’d never get through to her and when she said ‘yes’ I couldn’t believe it.” Her grandfather, adds Zaslow, was a rabbi. When tickets go on sale, they'll be available at the Music Coop and the Havurah. Churches and other organizations may buy a block of seats at a discount.
