The Grizzlies (11-4) jumped out to a 21-16 lead, but the SkyHawks served five straight points to knot it at 21-all before closing things out. The SkyHawks grabbed 10-2 and 10-3 leads in Sets 2 and 3, respectively. Senior setter Jordan Tilley helped the Grizzlies’ offense with 22 assists while middle hitter Hope Baldrica notched eight kills and five blocks. Ashland, which heads to Bend for the Clearwater Classic today, got seven kills from Grace Lenthe and six Olivia Rooney, the Grizzlies outside hitters. Middle hitter Ellie Case chipped in four kills and a couple of blocks. Girls Soccer At Eugene, after falling behind just before the intermission, the Ashland girls soccer team was unable to find the net in a Midwestern League matchup on Friday. The Grizzlies had a chance draw even with a second-half penalty kick but it was stopped by Lancers goalkeeper Nora Goodrie and Churchill handed Ashland its first conference loss in a 2-1 decision. Facienne Graham connected in the 25th minute to knot the score 1-all for the Grizzlies (8-2-1, 2-1 MWL), answering the Lancers who struck first on Abbie Taylor’s tally at the 18th-minute mark. Six minutes later, Avery Daniels put Churchill (5-2-2, 1-0 MWL) out in front for good. Boys Soccer At Eugene, Churchill beat Ashland 3-1 on Friday. Ashland's Lucas Golding converted a penalty kick to tie the game in the 50th minute. Boys Water Polo At Eugene, Ashland led from the start but was forced to hold off Marist’s comeback attempt to claim its second victory of the day in a 9-8 win and stay undefeated in Midwestern League play at Amazon Pool. The Grizzlies (10-5, 3-0 MWL) also topped South Albany 22-8 in at Albany Community Pool in an earlier game. Tristan Gavin registered four goals and two steals for the Grizzlies against Marist and Luke Abell scored three goals. Vincent Wright recorded 14 blocks and added a steal at goalie. Against South Albany, Abell and Michael Loop scored four goals apiece. Gavin went for three goals, two assists and a pair of steals. Wright stopped eight South Albany shots and made three assists. College Cross Country At San Francisco, three weeks of no competition and racing only against each other turned out to be a good way to prepare the second-ranked Southern Oregon men’s cross country team for what it saw at the finish line of Friday’s San Francisco State Invitational. It was all Raiders at Golden Gate Park’s Speedway Meadow, where SOU runners accounted for six of the top-seven men’s scorers and nine of the top-15 overall in the 172-person, 8,000-meter race. That translated to an easy team title – SOU accumulated just 20 points, and second-place Cal State Stanislaus had 89 – and the 24th-ranked Raider women claimed sixth in the 6K of 16 teams, which were mostly of the NCAA variety. Academy of Art’s Valentin Pepiot won the men’s race in 24 minutes, 53.1 seconds, and the unattached Luis Luna was runner-up in 24:49. The next six spots belonged to SOU: Jared Hixon in 25:04.2, Eric Ghelfi in 25:05.4, Kevin Jorgensen in 25:05.6, Max Runia in 25:11.4, Dylan Alexander in 25:12.6, and Cary Dunagan in 25:14.1. Connor Cushman, SOU’s final scorer, placed 12th (25:23.3). Zach Boyd-Helm was 14th (25:27.7), Jose Ortiz 23rd (25:42.0), and Greg Garcia 50th (26:24.3). Of the other 15 teams, only Stanislaus and Humboldt State had two runners among the top 15. For the third meet in a row, Summer Cano was SOU’s top women’s finisher, placing sixth in 22:15.7. Karen Silvas helped herself to 22nd (22:51.8) and Rebecca Lupescu was 28th (23:02.9) out of 159 total entrants. Rounding out SOU’s women’s scorers were Jessie Rozario in 45th (23:30.8) and Stephanie Ramirez in 56th (23:57.8). Monterey Bay’s Hanna Bell possessed the winning women’s time of 21:40.8., and Humboldt State’s Tatiana Gillick was second (21:46.7).
