OUR VIEW Our view: Keep it simple in OSF courtyard DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Nov. 20, 2014 @ 12:01 am Posted Nov. 20, 2014 @ 12:01 am » Social News We're sure the folks at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and the landscape architect firm they've hired already understand the basic attraction of OSF's brick courtyard and Green Show, but we'll say it anyway: Keep it simple. Part of the beauty of the space is that it's open and generally unencumbered with rules, written or implied. It's a gathering place whose simplicity is a big part of its attraction. Visitors can wander in and get a sense of the theater company's presence, without feeling they must queue up or follow a prescribed path. Green Show performances are marvelous both for the quality (and free) entertainment they provide, but also for the free-flowing nature of the audience. People can come or go, sit or stand and watch all or part of the show. Generally, there are no rules beyond acting courteously. The changes to the courtyard are needed to make it more accessible and safer and the two designs presented appear to do that by flattening the slope. OSF, to its credit, is seeking community input and drew a gathering of about 100 people this week to discuss the two proposed designs. The landscape architects say they want the courtyard to remain a "festive place" and a community gathering point, which suggests they get it. It is more than a place for ticket holders; in fact, its most valuable function is providing a space for people who just want to stop by and enjoy. It's an Ashland thing.
