LOCAL ROUNDUP Ashland doubles team, singles player roll into 5A championship matches Grizz girls in hunt for third straight team title Comment By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings DailyTidings.com By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted May. 23, 2015 at 2:00 AM By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted May. 23, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News The Ashland High girls tennis team advanced a doubles team and a singles player to the championship rounds and is closing in on what would be the program’s third straight Class 5A state championship after a successful Friday at the West Hills Racquet and Fitness Club in Portland. Ashley Knecht, a senior who’s seeded third in the singles bracket, upset No. 2 seed Tessa Kern of Corvallis, 6-3, 7-6 (5), in the semifinals to move into today’s championship round. Knecht will play top-seeded Madisyn Bryant of Marist in the final after Bryant steamrolled fourth-seeded Haley Moss of Wilsonville, 6-3, 6-2. Bryant defeated Knecht in the Midwestern League singles final last week. In girls doubles action, Ashland’s top-seeded team of Vika O’Brien and Anne Kim defeated the No. 3-seeded tandem of Lia VanSteeter and Anjali Chikkalingaiah (Crescent Valley), 6-3, 6-0, in the semifinals to move on to the final. There, they’ll play the No. 2 seeds, Sierra Winch and Jesse Vezo of Bend, for a chance to land O’Brien her fourth straight doubles title. The semifinal victories helped Ashland stay ahead of the pack in the 5A girls team title chase. The Grizzlies head into the final day in first place with 12 points, while Bend and Corvallis are tied for second with nine. In the 5A boys state tournament, Ashland’s unseeded doubles team of Rox Rogers and Nur Shelton, both freshmen, dropped a hard-fought quarterfinal match to the No. 2-seeded team of Logan Hausler and Daniel Pino, (Summit), 6-4, 6-4. Ashland singles player Mischa Kirby, a junior, won two consolation matches to advance to the consolation final. He’ll face Nick Lee of La Salle.   Prep Track and Field At Eugene, Ashland’s Wyatt Thompson-Siporen placed second in the long jump and third in the discus, Kelsey McKelvey placed third in the javelin and Dominic Meads took fourth in the discus to lead the Grizzlies in the first day of the Class 5A state meet Friday at Hayward Field. Also for Ashland, Mel Elshalom placed sixth in the long jump. Thompson-Siporen leaped 21 feet, 4 ½ inches to finish as the runner-up in the long jump behind only Alani Troutman of Redmond (21-7 ½), who notched three jumps that bested the field. McKelvey launched the javelin 125-11, finishing behind only Alexis Hassenger of Lebanon (130-7) and Raquel Pellecer of Sandy (129-9). Meads’ discus toss of 157-1 and Elshalom’s jump of 20-1 were Ashland’s other highlights.   Prep Baseball At Silverton, Silverton overcame deficits of 3-0 and 4-2, scoring the winning run on an RBI ground out in the fifth inning to beat Ashland 5-4 in a Class 5A play-in game Friday at Silverton High School. The Grizzlies, who finished the season 13-14, had the tying run on second base with two outs in the seventh but Silverton ace Mason Pearson struck out Tarquin Daley looking to cap a complete-game effort and preserve the victory for the Silver Foxes (13-14). Nick Sanderson went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and two RBIs to lead the Grizzlies. Caleb Bell went 1-for-2, scored twice and walked twice, and Daley also doubled. Sanderson also started and pitched into the fifth before being replaced by Steen Fredrickson, who took the loss. Kirk Martinson had a double for Silverton, which advances to the 16-team state tournament. The win advances the Panthers (18-9) to the 16-team state tournament and ends the Grizzlies’ season. Ashland finished 14-13. The Grizzlies scored two runs in the top of the fourth to get within 4-2 and had two runners in scoring position with one out in the fifth, but Central pitcher Erin Cole closed the door by striking out the next batter then inducing a ground ball with the count full. Ashland also left two runners stranded in both the second and fourth innings and left the bases loaded in the third, as Cole picked up the win after striking out five and walking four in six innings. Georgia Williams took the loss for Ashland, surrendering nine earned runs on nine hits in 5 1/3 innings. Hannah Teixiera was 1-for-2 with two walks to lead the Grizzlies at the plate.
