Gretchen Thiel, for instance, in Wednesday's edition writes that she has been "very uncomfortable with the discussion of people in Ashland who demonize these folks because their presence makes them uncomfortable." She's uncomfortable because others are uncomfortable. On the contrary, it's not their presence that people are objecting to, it's certain behaviors. Some have complained of physical threats, verbal threats, public urinating, defecating pets, setting fires, aggressive panhandling, obstructing public sidewalks, and other aggressive behaviors. I experienced such behavior myself. My wife and I were walking down the sidewalk after seeing a movie and three young "travelers" approached. As we passed them, one of them lunged his shoulder into me, knocking me sideways, and then they all had a big laugh about it. Yes, that made me uncomfortable. It's usually not the mentally ill who are causing problems, it's usually young aggressive panhandlers with an "I don't care," "in your face" attitude. People have been begging the City Council and the Police Department to do something about these kinds of behavior. It's time to do more than listen. It's time to come up with a plan and take action. Jim Flint Ashland Support climate bill Our federal Congress is controlled by individuals who care for short-term profit but apparently not for future generations. The clearest evidence of this is their denying the science of global warming and their efforts to block any action taken by the administration that could help reduce U.S. emissions of greenhouse gases. Faced with such a barrier to action at the federal level, it has become clear that Americans individually and regionally must take action. Several states across the country have already enacted comprehensive greenhouse gas cap-and-trade legislation. In all cases this has resulted in reduced emissions and continued economic growth. In fact economic growth has outpaced that of surrounding states lacking the cap-and-trade legislation. Oregon can join these states in leading the nation toward an effective response to global warming. The Oregon Healthy Climate Bill, to be introduced in 2016, will cap our greenhouse gas emissions, assist economically disadvantaged communities and help a healthy and sustainable economy progress towards the next century. Oregon became a national leader in 2007 by adopting goals for greenhouse gas emissions, but established no mechanism for achieving these goals. The Healthy Climate Bill provides the mechanism. And less populated areas should be properly represented, such as Upper Peninsula Michigan and Eastern Oregon.
