The 40-year-old man, whose name has not yet been released pending next of kin notification, had been swimming at the lake outside Ashland at about 1 p.m. Jackson County Sheriff''s Department officials said the man was swimming in the cove near the facility's water slides when he suddenly began to show signs of struggle, went under and didn't resurface. The sheriff's department, Jackson County Fire District No. 5 and Ashland Fire & Rescue responded, beginning of a search of the area before clearing the cove of other swimmers. "Marine patrol responded right away," said Sgt. Shawn Richards of the department's search and rescue division. Marine patrol boats continued a surface search before a search and rescue dive team arrived, combing the waters just offshore, where the witness had reported seeing the man go down. Sgt. Shawn Richards said divers swept back and forth in the area where the man had gone under, searching with their hands because of the poor visibility on the lake bottom. The search ended at about 4:15 p.m., when the man was found in at least 10 feet of water close to the shore. "Our heart goes out to the family members," Richards said. "Wish we could have done more."
