But staunchly defending each and every tree, no matter how inappropriately planted, is not the answer. The Downtown Beautification Project is moving ahead on one project after the City Council approved a makeover for the corner of Winburn Way at the north entrance to Lithia Park. But a second project — at the corner of Pioneer Street and Lithia Way — is headed back to the drawing board after council members expressed concern over the landscape architect's proposal to remove two red maples. The city hired landscape architect Kerry KenCairn, who presumably knows a thing or two about trees. She told the council red maples are not appropriate for urban locations because they require large root growth and tend to lift sidewalks. That didn't satisfy the council, which voted 5-1 to ask KenCairn to return with a new design that would retain the trees after Councilor Pam Marsh said saving trees is "an exceptionally high priority." There's nothing wrong with saving trees when it makes sense. But when the city's own expert says particular trees are unsuitable, the council should heed that advice and proceed accordingly. In this case, the new design could mean increased cost, and the trees might have to come out anyway. Meanwhile, the Winburn Way project approved last week protects a large conifer and expands the soil around it — because it is suitable for its location.
