SISKIYOU COUNTY Chinook runs strong in Shasta, Scott rivers Many are offspring from large 2012 run Comment By David Smith Siskiyou Daily News DailyTidings.com By David Smith Siskiyou Daily News Posted Dec. 15, 2014 at 8:59 PM By David Smith Siskiyou Daily News Posted Dec. 15, 2014 at 8:59 PM » Social News It has been a big year for Chinook salmon returning to Siskiyou County. Large returns have been counted on all three tributaries monitored by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. The CDFW video weir on the Shasta River saw 17,802 Chinook pass its camera, remaining consistent with the two-year ocean stay of the offspring of 2012’s large return. Data for the Shasta are approximately one month behind, which could mean 2014’s return is closer to 2012’s 29,544. The Bogus Creek weir saw the third-largest return of Chinook since 2003, again following a large return in 2012. On the Scott River, 7,883 Chinook were counted as of December 2, marking the second largest return since 2007. On the coho salmon counts, all tributaries have seen a slower-than-normal start, with only five counted on the Shasta as of November 12. Five have also been counted at the Bogus weir, but there is a large gap in the data during what previous data show is typically the largest period of return. The Scott River has seen 302 return as of December 2, which data show is consistent with the two- and three-year classes that returned in 2011 and 2012. Last year, over 2,700 returned to the Scott, the bulk of which returned during mid-to-late December. CDFW Fisheries biologist Morgan Knechtle reported Friday that high stream flows have led the agency to remove the counting weirs. He explained that more data will be reported in the coming month, and crews will conduct visual counts as well.
