LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, Oct. 8 DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Oct. 8, 2014 @ 2:00 am Posted Oct. 8, 2014 @ 2:00 am » Social News Dyer is worthy I am writing in support of Rick Dyer, the most qualified candidate running for the position of Jackson County commissioner, position 1. Of the four candidates in contention for the position, I believe only Rick Dyer is worthy of our votes. I have known Rick for nearly 40 years. As a graduate from Southern Oregon College (now SOU) with a degree in accounting and business management, with a background in management with several companies in Jackson County, he knows the importance of accurate forecasting and the need to maintain a balanced budget. He is currently the owner/operator of a local construction business, so he has experienced the challenges of running a small business in our community. He achieved a law degree while running that business, and raising a family, so he understands the value of hard work, planning, and time management to achieve worthwhile goals. He has served on the board of the Rogue Valley Transportation District for five years, gaining an understanding of how our local government agencies operate. This experience gives him an edge in evaluating the potential impact of proposed legislation on Jackson County. Join me on Nov. 4 in voting for Rick Dyer! Bill Powell, Medford Iran agreement near Next week, the nuclear talks between the U.S. and Iran will resume. While conflict rages throughout the Middle East, they are in reach of securing an agreement to resolve the dispute over Iran's nuclear program by Nov. 24. Oregon's senators have both spoken out in support of these historic negotiations. Sen. Ron Wyden wrote in his recent constituent response letter that he believes "the United States must take this opportunity to avert a more serious confrontation," and warned that "enacting additional sanctions now would risk jeopardizing the progress that has already been made." Sen. Jeff Merkley, for his part, noted earlier this year that he opposed "additional sanctions legislation because I share the views of many foreign policy experts that it could undermine the ongoing negotiations and weaken our multinational coalition, ultimately making less likely our goal of preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons." Sustained diplomacy with Iran can also lead to cooperation on other issues, such as addressing the ongoing violence in Syria and Iraq. Many politicans and commentators in Washington are calling for a simplistic, hawkish approach to Iran, but I hope Oregon's senators and my representative will keep cooler heads.
