LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, Feb. 3 Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Feb. 3, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Feb. 3, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News Stop poaching Oregon, tracking similar initiatives in Washington and California, is posed to ban wildlife trafficking with the November 2016 proposed ballot measure prohibiting the sale of products and parts from elephants, rhinos, tigers, lions, leopards, cheetahs, jaguars, whales and other critically threatened or endangered species. The act will be known as the Wildlife Trafficking Prevention Act, and amends Section 2 of ORS 498.022. Poachers have been known to hack off elephants' and rhinos' faces for the tusks or horns while the animals are still alive. Approximately 35,000 elephants are killed in Africa yearly for their ivory. Only 29,000 rhinos remain in the wild with 1,200 killed in 2014 in South Africa alone. Poachers have poisoned a watering hole recently with cyanide, killing 300 elephants at once and other animals who fed on their carcasses. Don't forget our beloved Cecil the lion, killed in 2015 by wealthy Minnesota dentist Walter Palmer. Cecil's untimely and tragic demise brought to the forefront the urgency and necessity for the public to take action to save endangered species from poaching, cruelty, and the threat of extinction. Frost Ashland Critical mistakes Climate deniers cherry-pick a few years from a data set lasting over a century to try to support the lie that there has been no warming for almost two decades. They make several critical mistakes: They forget that over 90 percent of the heat energy trapped goes into our oceans, and ocean heat content has been rising consistently. They ignore the science showing that in reality there has been no significant slowing of the warming trend. And they ignore the five-year trend 2011-2015 that is even steeper than before 1998. We must all reduce our greenhouse gas emissions if we are to reverse this trend. We can enjoy good-paying jobs in Oregon while reducing our greenhouse gas emissions. Every state that has enacted a climate pollution cap program has also enjoyed economic growth and a reduction in emissions. We in Oregon can do our part also. Globally, our emissions may contribute little, but we can be part of the solution rather than continue to be part of the problem. Oregonians who want to conserve our beautiful state, nation, and planet for future generations should support the Healthy Climate Bill to be introduced in February in the Oregon Legislature. Paula Perez Costas Ashland Keep gas rules My wife and I really appreciate not having to fill our own vehicle with fuel, particularly the diesel pickup. Having lived in another state and seen people smoking or talking on a cellphone while pumping their gas, the safety factor of having a trained server makes more sense. In my experience, fuel prices in California are nearly always higher than Oregon, so the argument of cost in hiring attendants seems unfounded. We strongly support the present regulations, which help the employment picture and benefit many less able and senior citizen drivers.
