WORK BEGINS MONDAY Fountain, planter to be removed from downtown Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Feb. 13, 2015 @ 6:10 pm Updated Feb 13, 2015 at 6:12 PM Posted Feb. 13, 2015 @ 6:10 pm Updated Feb 13, 2015 at 6:12 PM » Social News A 24-year-old marble fountain in Chautauqua Square, in front of the Black Swan Theatre at the corner of East Main and Pioneer streets, will be removed next week, along with a planter box. The work comes in response to a request from the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, which leases the square from the city. The fountain was installed in 1990 but shut off in 1992, after the marble began to leak water from its basin. OSF officials have said said that removing the fountain would allow the festival to use the space for community activities, as well as make the area less attractive as a transient hangout. The planter box is scheduled to be removed on Monday and the fountain on Tuesday.  The city had offered to sell the fountain to anyone who wanted to save it, but received no bids, according to city Administrator Dave Kanner. Kanner said the parks department hopes to salvage some of the components from the fountain to be used elsewhere. The parks department will also attempt to relocate the magnolia tree and witch hazel shrub that are in the planter box. Work removing the planter and fountain may take up to four days. Following the removal, new concrete will be poured in the affected area and block walls will be rebuilt. On Tuesday and Wednesday, the sidewalk will be closed and pedestrian traffic will be diverted around the site.  On Wednesday, one lane of traffic will be closed as well.
