In both format and content, I find myself looking forward to my trip to the mailbox each morning, and thus far have been enjoying the changes, which indicate an awareness of a pretty sophisticated readership. The last two mornings, however, I was concerned and disturbed enough to be writing this letter. First, the absence of any direct reporting of the huge climate march itself, either in New York or locally in Medford and the other cities in Oregon. Second, in today's paper (Wednesday, Sept. 24), I found myself disappointed by your choice of Another View not because I disagree with Allen Sanderson's position but because I found his arguments (disguised as "unintended consequences") for not raising the minimum wage unconvincing, vapid, and trite. I'm happy to entertain Another View when it's provocative, original, unusual and substantial. I want Another View to be engaging and challenging. Please raise the bar on your editorial page. Dot Fisher-Smith, Ashland Return to what's right Call me old-fashioned, but who can deny that those so-called old-fashioned values built this country into a superpower in its short 200-year history? So why are we abandoning the very standards that have made this country great? I see candidate Dave Dotterrer as a welcome return to what has always been right and strong and true about this country — a return to the basic fundamentals that our parents and grandparents respected. I’m not afraid of being called a fuddy-duddy, but I am afraid of the downward spiral I see my country heading in. My vote goes to someone with the same values I have —Dave Dotterrer for State Senate. Pat Woods, Phoenix Who's vague now? Interesting contrast in the Politis and Sommer letters (Sept. 30). Sommers begins by telling us Alan Bates is a wonderful person who works hard — but says not a word about issues. She then turns to Dave Dotterrer, claiming he offers only “vague right-wing rhetoric and attack ads.” In his letter, Politis does not mention Bates at all but tells us the direction Dotterrer has promised on his website and in many presentations to take on income, property, business inheritance and capital gains taxes, fees, and support for natural resource industries. Now, tell me again, who is “vague?” Don Paul, Ashland Elect Dyer I would like to encourage all small-business owners to vote for fellow local business owner Rick Dyer for Jackson County commissioner, position 1. Rick owns an energy/construction business and is all too aware of the myriad problems we face. One of his goals is to help streamline the bureaucratic red tape that small business owners deal with. He’s keenly aware of the importance of budgeting and sticking to a budget during both hard times and good times. Rick knows that making payroll, rent and utilities are all things that small business owners face on an ongoing basis.
