The 14th annual Ashland Independent Film Festival features 97 films on seven screens. The festival also includes workshops, talk-back sessions with movie makers and question-and-answer sessions with others involved in movie production. Sandwiched between the opening of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival's indoor season and the beginning of the OSF outdoor season, the AIFF is eagerly awaited by film buffs every year. Filmmakers say this festival is among their favorites because audiences are especially engaged and interested. Ashland was already on the tourist map thanks to OSF, which enjoys a national reputation as a premier regional repertory theater. The film festival has only added to the town's appeal as a destination. The Ashland festival specializes in small, intimate and overlooked independent films, including many shorts. Although the festival itself happens only in the spring, events continue all year long, including special screenings and a regional student film competition. The festival's lineup always includes a number of local productions and films with local interest. Although the festival has grown to support a permanent staff, it could not occur without the hard work of more than 350 volunteers who put in thousands of hours of effort.
