The Grizzlies fell behind North Eugene by double-digits heading into the fourth quarter and rallied to within six before running out of steam late as the visiting Highlanders picked up a 54-40 Midwestern League victory Friday at Mountain Avenue Gym. Ashland’s Georgia Williams had 17 points and six rebounds and hit two clutch 3-pointers to lead the Grizzlies’ fourth-quarter rally, but Ashland shot itself in the foot with back-to-back turnovers and couldn’t recover. The loss dropped the shorthanded Grizzlies – senior post Michaela Dunn sat out with an ankle injury and junior Olivia Rooney is likely lost for the season with a broken leg – to 7-8 overall and 0-5 in the MWL. North Eugene, which has now won four of its last five games, improved to 11-6 and 3-2. Ashland hit 5 of 16 free throws and scored only five points in the third quarter, when the Highlanders extended their lead from three points to 10. “It’s kind of our classic move right now – we’re just not coming out of halftime with intensity,” Ashland head coach Ashley Hafner said. “We let the game kind of slip away there.” Sophomore post Leilani Sukles had 10 points and eight rebounds and senior guard Hannah Teixeira played standout defense, but with their second-leading scorer (Dunn) unable to play the Grizzlies struggled on offense. “We have different people stepping up every game and we’re just trying to find lineups that work,” Hafner said. Sierra Carrier scored 19 points, Ally Gambill 13 and Kelly O’Malley 11 for the Challengers, who swarmed Williams on defense and drained four 3-pointers (three by Campbell) on offense. North Eugene also helped its cause by drilling 12 of 13 free throws. “(Williams) can’t get a foul call, so she’s battling the entire game just to get her shots off,” Hafner said. “And Teixeira was a big part of our defense in the fourth quarter. She didn’t score very many points, but she’s all heart and no stat line.” NORTH EUGENE (54) – Thompson 0, Sand 6, Daniels 5, Keller 0, O’Malley 11, Carrier 19, Campbell 0, Gambill 13. Boys Basketball At Eugene, Collin Malcolm scored a game-high 19 points and McKane Ellis added 11 as Ashland moved back above .500 in the Midwestern League with a 47-26 win over North Eugene. The Grizzlies led 22-16 at the break and pulled away from there to improve to 8-6 overall and 2-1 in the MWL. North Eugene, led by Josh Hill’s 11 points, fell to 1-15 and 0-4. The Highlanders have lost 11 straight. North Eugene hit a 3 to cut Ashland’s lead to three early in the third quarter, but Ashland junior forward Graycen Kennedy answered with back-to-back treys and Ashland cruised the rest of the way. “It just spurred us on right there,” Ashland head coach Keithan Gregg said. “We were shorthanded, and Ethan Jones sprained his ankle (Thursday) night and barely played, so we were down four of our top seven guys. So to be down and have to shuffle our lineup the way we did, it was a good win for us.” Men’s Basketball At Caldwell, Idaho, fourth-ranked College of Idaho used a 17-2 run in the second half to pull away from 10th-ranked Southern Oregon and survived a late rally by the visitors to pick up a key Cascade Conference victory, 80-72, Friday at the J.A. Albertson Activities Center. Southern Oregon cut the lead to 70-68 on a 3-pointer by Eric Thompson with 2:57 to go, but the Raiders’ comeback hopes stalled there as they faltered on their next three offensive possessions. Thompson had 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Raiders, who fell to 17-4 overall and 7-3 in the CCC, a game behind the first-place Coyotes. Jordan West added 16, Justin Martin 11 and Tim Weber eight points, seven assists and two blocks. Joey Nebeker had 19 points and 10 rebounds to pace the Coyotes (18-3, 8-2), who picked up their 28th consecutive win at home. Women’s Basketball At Caldwell, Idaho, 12th-ranked Southern Oregon used a 20-4 second-half run to cruise to a 79-66 victory over College of Idaho on Friday at the J.A. Albertson Activities Center. Ashley Claussen had 18 points and nine rebounds, Alexi Smith 17 points and Carly Meister 17 points, 13 boards and five assists for the Raiders (17-2, 8-2 CCC).
