At a well-attended Oregon Honey Festival Saturday at Ashland Springs Hotel, beekeepers and activists offered tastings of honey and honey-rich food products and are educating people of the need to use bee-friendly pesticides or natural products.  “It’s important to reduce grass and have plants that are supportive of pollinators, not just bees, but also hummingbirds, butterflies, moths, bumblebees and native bees,” said Kristina LeFever of the Rogue Valley Pollinator Project.  The expected passage of the Bee City resolution by the Ashland council will not only raise awareness about how the local biosphere works, she notes, but also give beekeepers and pollinator groups legitimacy for activities in support of bees.  City Councilwoman Pam Marsh said the Bee City program would be overseen by the Parks & Recreation Department. It promotes reduced pesticide use, planting guidelines and creation of bee-friendly zones. It calls for a National Pollinator Week, creation of a pollinator subcommittee and Bee City signs at city entrances. Talent recently became the second Bee City in the U.S., and Carrboro, N.C. is also now a Bee City. Ashland would be the fourth. A prime mover in the Talent resolution, Dolly Warden, said bees are dying because they don’t have enough food to eat — and when they do, it’s sprayed with pesticides, making them susceptible to diseases. (This paragraph has been updated to correct the number of Bee Cities.) Being a Bee City has given bee lovers credence and a platform to spread the word to the community, she says. LeFever passed out lists of organic pesticides, including citrus oil, cayenne, salt spray, onion-garlic spray and eucalyptus oil, all of which can be used instead of commercial insecticides containing neonicotinoids, a chemical implicated in th disastrous Colony Collapse Disorder over the last eight years. The organizer of the Oregon Honey Festival, Sharon Schmidt of Phoenix, said she seeks to educate consumer about the enormous range of honey varietals, flavors and colors, stemming from the fact that bees gather nectar in a 2 mile radius and each colony has different tastes in what they gather.   “My mission is to connect people with apiculture through taste,” she says, “and also to get people to more deeply appreciate that bees are in a precarious position, as are humans. Bees get stressed by lack of forage and water, by poisons and by doing too much with too little reward. We’ve seen a decrease in production in almost every state."  Ashland’s Bee City designation is important, Schmidt adds, because “that which happens to the least of us affects what happens to the greatest of us.” Paul Davitt of Davitt Apiaries in Keno said honeybees get all the attention because they are the moneymakers in the industry, so he focuses on spreading the word that native bees, such as bumblebees, mason bees and leafcutter bees, also do considerable pollination.
