In simple terms: a pine tree, or something similar. They are abundant in Southwestern Oregon. A “Hike and Learn” led by the Friends of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument will explore the unique diversity of the forest community Friday and Saturday, June 10 and 11. A lecture from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 10, at the Ashland Library, 410 Siskiyou Blvd., and a hike in the monument from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 11, will both be led by botanist Doug Kendig. The program will focus on conifer species identification along Chinquapin Mountain Road and Beaver Creek Road ending at Willow Creek Road at the southern base of Howard Prairie. The trip is estimated to last between four and five hours. The tour will consist of approximately three short hikes with no significant elevation change. Meet for the Saturday hike at Greensprings Inn and Restaurant parking lot, at the junction of Highway 66 and Hyatt Lake Road at 9 a.m. To carpool, meet at 8:15 a.m., in the Shop’n Kart parking lot at 2268 Ashland St. The trip will pass through southern Cascade forest communities comprised primarily of White fir, mixed Douglas-fir and white fir, and mixed conifer stands with additional species of sugar pine, ponderosa pine, incense cedar and a Western juniper island.The tour will pass through areas of differently aged species in order for comparison. The Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument was established in 2000 for its biodiversity. It protects 86,774 acres of forest and grasslands at the junction of the Cascade, Siskiyou, and Klamath Mountain Ranges in Southwestern Oregon, according to a document released by Friends of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument. “Hike and Learn” is a monthly event.
