MOVIE REVIEW Cotillard embarks on a journey of hope in 'Two Days, One Night' Comment By Chris Honoré for Revels DailyTidings.com By Chris Honoré for Revels Posted Feb. 12, 2015 @ 12:01 am By Chris Honoré for Revels Posted Feb. 12, 2015 @ 12:01 am » Social News Two Days, One Night ; In French with English subtitles ; 1 hr 35 min; Rated PG-13   To fully appreciate the extraordinary portrayal by Marion Cotillard in “Two Days, One Night,” the viewer must first understand the context of her situation. Sandra (Cotillard), married, with two children and a much-needed salary, has been on medical leave from a small company that makes solar panels. During her absence, management decides that the contracted-for work can be done by the remaining 16 factory floor workers and, therefore, she is to be released. A preliminary vote is taken on a Friday, and the workers are told that if they are prepared to pick up the extra work they will receive a bonus of $1,000 Euros; however, they must vote to pink slip Sandra. The majority agrees. Sandra’s boss, inexplicably and cruelly, signals that he will allow another vote on Monday morning. If there is a change of heart and a majority vote to forgo the bonus, she can return to work. And so the film, set in the modest suburbs of Liege, Belgium, begins in earnest. With the encouragement of her husband, Manu (Fabrizio Rongione), a restaurant cook, she reluctantly visits her co-workers, one at a time, over the period of two days and one night (hence the title). What is soon revealed is that Sandra is profoundly fragile, having been on leave for depression and stress because of their tenuous financial situation. She understands what’s at stake for herself and her family and so summons the courage, which ebbs and flows, to go to each worker’s home (some are in cafes, coaching soccer, or in a Laundromat). These are all working-class people, many with second jobs on weekends, struggling to make ends meet. For them, the bonus offers financial relief from mortgages and tuition and private debts. What is astonishing, and beautifully drawn, are Sandra’s encounters with each individual. Though feeling deeply reluctant and humiliated, she walks to each door and rings the bell and prepares to ask a question that she is loath to even consider: Will you vote to keep me? Will you sacrifice what represents a windfall so I can return to work? Swallowing Xanax, buoyed and crestfallen, each encounter fraught with uncertainty, Sandra carries on creating an intense journey that is deeply painful and yet potentially hopeful. And so good is Cotillard, so penetrating is her ability to convey what this very personal appeal costs her, that the film becomes an emotional thriller of sorts and a well-crafted parable. It is impossible not to invest in Sandra as a character, to wish that her situation will indeed end well on Monday morning and that the vote will turn in her favor. The hope is that she will ultimately find solidarity where there is often just hesitation, if not outright rejection. What the filmmakers convey is that there has been a global recession of sweeping magnitude. In America, certainly, there is and there are countless people who experience, on the deepest level, what work, a job, and a salary mean to them and to their families. Many, like Sandra, are just one paycheck away from ruin. Once again, it is difficult to fully convey how completely Cotillard becomes her character. Her appearance is absent all glamor, her hair finger-combed, pulled into a haphazard ponytail, her expressions a kaleidoscope of emotions as she pushes back against those emotions that would send her to bed, under the covers, wanting only to give up and never again walk up to a door and ring the bell.
