William Leroy Gurge, 39, of the 700 block of Cambridge Street pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree assault, third-degree assault and fourth-degree assault Friday in Jackson County Circuit Court. Under Oregon law, second-degree assault is a Measure 11 crime carrying a minimum sentence of five years and 10 months in prison upon conviction. According to an affidavit by Ashland police, on March 13, Gurge allegedly closed Alyssa Murray's arm in his vehicle window and drove approximately 100 feet, causing injury to her arm, shoulder and back. He then allegedly stopped and let her arm out. The alleged incident happened on Grandview Drive in Ashland, the affidavit said. Murray, 40, and Gurge have a son together, the affidavit said. Gurge has a pre-trial conference hearing set for June 15. He is currently barred from contact with Murray and their son, according to court records.
