LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, April 27 Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Apr. 27, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Apr. 27, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Spreading the wealth Obama caused a storm of criticism when he suggested during a campaign rally that he hoped to spread the nation's wealth around some. What makes this thought so supposedly anathema is the sea of propaganda surrounding economic discussion in our country. Any such thoughts, specifically to cause a downward distribution of the wealth, have been labeled as socialism. And socialism, in right-leaning terms, means government control of the economy, and even the loss of freedom. This is pure nonsense, in terms of economics and in terms of political science. Furthermore, it absurdly implies that the only time redistribution can be considered good is when it makes the rich richer. Consider the tax cuts for the rich under Bush. The result was a huge redistribution of wealth upward, greatly increasing the separation between lower and upper income groups begun under Regan. From this, know for certain, as far as Republicans are concerned, that redistribution of wealth is a fine thing as long as it makes the rich richer. Jerry Nutter Ashland Theater closure sad I’m sad to see Peter Wickliffe’s theater close. Ashland is known as a theater town. The Oregon Shakespeare Festival does a wonderful job each year but small local theater brings a different experience, more up-close and more personal. With Jeannine Grizzard heading up ACT, Richard Heller heading up Theatre Convivio and Peter Wickliffe heading up Thanks for the Memories, theater needs a real space here in Ashland. Not all directors and actors can be part of OSF, but they need and deserve a place to show off their talent and love of theater. I have attended plays at each of the three theater companies and have always walked away impressed with the acting talent and how so much can be presented in often a makeshift space. And it’s great to spend $10 or $15 dollars to see a wonderful performance. If the three theaters could come together and have a long-range plan to raise money and plan a year’s worth of plays, in time, a real theater space could be more than a dream. I would like to thank all those who work so hard to bring Ashland good local theater. Phil Loveless Ashland Buy a ski pass The season pass sale for Mount Ashland ends on April 30. Sales have been slow. I'm challenging previous pass holders to step up and buy their passes for next season. I understand people may be hesitant after the past two poor snow years. It is more important than ever to support the mountain if you would like the resort to survive. Why do I think that is important? This past season I taught my friends' 9-year-old girl how to ski. I saw a light go on in Ava's eyes as she felt the joy of the sport. She will now be a life-long skier. Thousands of you can relate to that experience of teaching a young person a new, positive activity. Mount Ashland has provided that for several generations over the past 50 years. It gives youngsters empowerment and confidence. It helps teach them about the outdoors and the incredible part of the planet we inhabit. It is also a wonderful family sport. My hope is that the ski area will be here long after I am gone so generations to come can enjoy the mountain and the sport. What are the consequences of not getting a pass? Possibly losing the resort for good. Are you willing to take that gamble? Please buy your pass now and help the mountain survive.
