We’d like you to participate in a project we’re working on as part of the “Community Journalism in Practice: A Day in the Life of Ashland” class I’m teaching at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Southern Oregon University. We have 16 people in the class. Last week we talked about some reporting basics, what community journalism is and started putting together a list of stories. The premise is we’ll fan out on one day, Wednesday, May 6, and take something of a core sample of the Ashland community and what’s going on on that day. It’s something like putting a dipper (or 16) into the ocean and examining what we find with the idea it might tell us something about what else is out there. I know, that might be like putting 16 dots on a piece of paper and trying to connect them. Doesn’t necessarily connect. But what I do know for sure is that we will learn more about those 16 data points. Here’s where you come in: One class member came up with fine idea of extending our reach by inviting you, our Tidings readers, to participate by adding your own notes on what that day is like for you. We’ll do this in the form of a letters-to-the-editor section in the “Day in the Life of Ashland” edition when it’s published (the plan is for that to be the week after next). So what do you do? Pay attention to what you do next Wednesday, May 6. It may be an entirely typical, unremarkable day. We like that. We want to find out what “normal” or “typical” means in the community in which we live. Or maybe something remarkable, out-of-the-ordinary will happen. Great. Write down a bit about what happens (or doesn’t) and what it means to you (optional). Then email 150-250 words to me (my email address is at the bottom of this column). We’ll put those together with reports from other Ashlanders also paying attention at the same time and add those tiles to the mosaic we’re piecing together of what our town looks like. What are some of the other tiles? Students in the class could come up with stories to pursue that interest them, so we came up with interesting assortment (at least, we hope it’s interesting). In no particular order, students will be spending some time with Ashland bicyclists, finding out about efforts to make this an officially Bicycle Friendly town; what’s going on that day to prepare for plans in the works to bring rail traffic through town later this year; what it is about Ashland that gives it a reputation as a spiritually friendly area; hanging at the dog park; with an animal rehabilitator; with a Recology waste pickup crew; and with a Road Scholar group visiting Ashland to get their take on Ashland. Also on the list are the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Forensics Laboratory, why Ashland is so pedestrian-friendly, Teachers Appreciation Week, an Ashland garden, the Plaza, ties between local bed and breakfasts and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and preparations for what could be a bad fire season.
