Patrons can get up close and personal with more than 30 authors and publishers from a variety of genres. “There is so much talent in the valley. Here is a chance to meet some of the local authors, buy a meaningful gift for the holiday season, and have it personally signed by its creator,” said Amy Blossom, Ashland branch library manager. The author fair will take place 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, in the library’s Gresham room. This is the library’s first author fair, though Blossom says she would like to make it an annual event. “It’s really special to meet an author, to get a sense of who they are and then take home their book. It makes you much more connected to the book,” said Blossom. “It’s also a great way to support your community and literature and what you love.” The idea for a local book fair came to Blossom after she attended the book and author festival at Southern Oregon University in early October. “It was wonderful seeing so many authors together and learning about their work. I started thinking about what the library could do to support authors in the area,” she said. “We host readings and talks, but why not do a small author fair before the holidays, then people can read local and buy local,” she added. Blossom reached out to some writer friends for tips on organizing a book fair, then she put out a call for writers to the southern Oregon chapter of the Willamette Writers Association, an organization that offers creative and professional support to writers. “My announcement went out Saturday at noon and within 24 hours all the spots were filled, with a waiting list,” she said. The list of authors includes Deborah Zaslow, author of the memoir “Bringing Bubbe Home”; Ed Battistella, author of “Sorry About That: The Language of Public Apologies”; children’s book author Kim Griswald; and “Backroads of the Pacific Crest Trail” author Ed McBee. Poet Amy Miller will sell her poetry chapbooks and handcrafted origami poetry boxes. “We have a wide range of genres represented and new books for people to discover,” said Blossom. “It will be great to have so much creative energy in one place.” The book fair will also have representatives from several local publishers on hand, including White Cloud Press, Wellstone Press, Fuse and Exterminating Angel Press. There will also be raffle prizes such as books and book bags that visitors can win throughout the afternoon. With Ashland’s wealth of writers and readers, Blossom says there will be something for everyone at this event. “People can meet their favorite authors or discover some new favorites,” she said.
